Prior to translating the GEQ,
1. Researchers should read and follow published guidelines for translating instruments for use
in cross-cultural research. We recommend the following articles:
Brislin, R. W. (1980). Translation and content analysis of oral and written materials.
In H. C. Triandis & J. H. Berry (Eds.), Handbook of Cross-Cultural Psychology Methodology (Vol. 2, pp. 389-444).
Boston: Allyn and Bacon, Inc.
Butcher, J. N. (1982). Cross-cultural research methods in clinical psychology. In P. Kendall &
J. N. Butcher (Eds.), Handbook of research methods in clinical psychology (pp. 273-308). New York: John Wiley & Sons.
2. Researchers must agree to provide Dr. Tsai with a final version of the translated GEQ,
so that it can be posted and made available to other researchers. An electronic copy of the
translated version of the GEQ should be sent to tsailab@psych.stanford.edu
In addition, a paper copy of the translated version of the GEQ should be sent to: The Culture and Emotion Lab,
Department of Psychology, Bldg. 420 Jordan Hall, Stanford, CA 94305. If any items of the GEQ have been changed,
researchers should also send English versions of their instruments.
