Sensation and Perception: Psych 115s

Assessment 5

Based on material from class lectures on Object and Face Recognition.
1. What is a geon? (20 words or less). [2 points]

ANSWER: A primitive 3D shape/object; more complex objects are (perceptually) comprised of geons.

2. Being able to recognize a common object (like a blender) more easily from the side than from the top is an example of ________ -dependent recognition.

ANSWER: view

3. The IT brain area in monkeys has columns with cells responsive to various shapes as well as to ________.

ANSWER: faces

4. Describe the difference between the monkey and human brain areas that exhibit face-selective responses. (20 words or less). [2 points] [Hint: refer to #3 above].

ANSWER: Monkey IT has intermixed face/shape columns; humans appear to have 2 distinct brain areas.

5. [True or False]: Prosopagnosics never have trouble recognizing anything other than human faces.

ANSWER: false

6. [True or False]: According to Gestalt Psychology principles of perceptual organization, a symmetric form (as opposed to an asymmetric one) is more likely to be perceived as 'figure' than as 'ground' (ignoring other factors).

ANSWER: true

7. Describe (or give an example of) a major failure of the template-matching models of object recognition. (20 words or less). [2 points]

ANSWER: Template-matching is only suited for 2D forms; also: it is easy to contruct an example symbol that best fits the wrong template (e.g., A and R example in text).
