How to Get Credit for Research or Independent Study

If you would like to get credit for independent study or research, you first need to speak with the Psychology faculty member with whom you plan to work, and discuss the details of the project or research (i.e. hours/week and type of research). You should decide together which course is appropriate (Psych 193, Psych 194 or Psych 195 – see below) and how many units you will receive for credit. The units for 193, 194 or 195 vary from lab to lab, usually relating to number of hours and type of work. You will also need to determine whether or not your project or research will require you to have keys to the building or a particular office/lab. These details should be worked out with the faculty member in the first week of the quarter or before the add deadline for each quarter.

Psych 193 (Special Laboratory Projects) is used to give credit for research done in Professor Dweck's lab only. Only students working with Professor Dweck should enroll in Psych 193. If you are doing research with any other Psychology faculty member, then you should enroll in Psych 195.

Psych 194 ( Reading and Special Work) is used to give credit for a special directed reading project or independent study done with a Psychology faculty member.

Psych 195 (Special Laboratory Projects) is used to give credit for research done in a Psychology department lab.

Enrolling in Psych 193, 194 or 195 is different from regular course enrollment. You'll need to go to Search for Classes in Axess and then click on the Independent Study link at the bottom of the page. In addition to entering in the course number, you need to enter the faculty member with whom you've arranged to work and the number of units agreed upon by you and the faculty member. PLEASE NOTE, PSYCH 193 IS ONLY FOR STUDENTS WORKING WITH PROFESSOR DWECK.
