Paid Participant
Rights and Responsibilities

As a participant you should expect to be treated with respect and kindness. You have several rights including:

  • The right to choose to participate in the studies that interest you. There are no obligations to participate in particular studies
  • The right to be notified in a timely fashion when a researcher must cancel your appointment.
  • The right to be fully informed about the research studies you participate in. You will be asked to give your consent before each study. Please read all consent forms.
  • The right to have your questions about the research answered by the researcher
  • The right to stop your participation at any time. You do not have to provide a reason to the researcher but as a courtesy to us please notify the Human Subjects Coordinator at hscoordinator@lists.stanford.edu if you feel uncomfortable in any study.
  • The right to receive payment according to the terms listed on individual consent forms for each study.

As a participant you also have several responsibilities. Please:

  • Be prepared to show your photo ID when you come to participate in a study.
  • Only participate in each study one time. Please keep track of which studies you have already participated in.
  • Please do not sign up for too many studies. You should not participate in research as a "job" or for regular income. It is important that our participants are inexperienced in research. If you participate in too many studies you will be asked to stop signing up for studies. You will no longer be eligible to participate.
  • Know the location of the study before you arrive for your appointment. Room numbers should be listed on each study posting. We do not have public computers in the building so bring this information with you.
  • Keep information you learn about a study private if the researcher requests that you do so
  • Notify researchers via email 12 hours in advance if you have to cancel.
  • Show up to your appointments on-time and go directly to the study location. Please do not wander through the building. This can disrupt studies being conducted in the lab rooms. If you arrive early please wait in the first floor lounge. If you need help finding a specific room please ask someone.
  • Show up to all studies you sign up for or cancel in a timely manner. If you miss your appointments more than 3 times you may be blocked from signing up for future studies.
  • Provide proof of your identity to a researcher if requested
  • Provide accurate and truthful information. If you "cheat" or do not follow the directions in a particular study you may be blocked from siging up for future studies. If you do not want to continue with a study please notify the researcher rather than provide untruthful information. The validity of our research depends on the information our participants provide.
  • Provide your tax information to researchers to process your payment. Researchers may request your Social Security Number or your Tax ID number, your mailing address, and your signature. You cannot be paid unless you provide this information. Your personal information will remain completely confidential and will be kept separate from any research data.

If you have any questions about your rights and responsibilities as a paid research participant please contact the Human Subjects Coordinator at hscoordinator@lists.stanford.edu
